Mansfield Castle Hotel, Tain - Dave "Charlie" Chaplin

Mansfield Castle Hotel is situated in the Royal Burgh of Tain which is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland. Formerly known as Mansfield Hotel, this is a stunning Victorian building in set in 3.5 acres of picturesque gardens.

The Story goes that the Mansfield was originally built due to a rich Uncle making his money in the tea trade between Britain and India. He left his wealth to his two nieces. Joanna Macdonald was the first of the sisters to build her lovely mansion – the more commonly known as the Morangie Hotel. This is yet another fantastic building completed by Andrew Maitland and Sons, Architects in 1902. This firm of architects is well known in the area for creating a number of the towns’ buildings of interest.

Joanna’s sister Annie soon followed suit by building her own mansion (now known as Mansfield Castle Hotel). These two sisters have played the part in many of the towns’ ghost stories over the years.
